Bonnie Schneider

In part due to my graduation from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, however, I also teach (Brown University 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts programs first hand (Brown University) and believe that it is important to integrate education and the study of art into other disciplines. This is not surprising to an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! The ethnomusicology program that I joined at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music at a College of Letters and Science. It's a pleasure to be able to combine multiple interests. I also like seeing the whole overall picture. It's great teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I am a published with three of my books published: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Music and Expressing Culture. And I alternate periods when I am pursuing primarily academic activities with periods when I add administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of the Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies from 1999, and as Chair of the Department of Music again).
